Introduction

The purpose of this page is to entice those not familiar with the game to learn some of the basics and become intrigued.

Typical Bidding System

A typical bidding system is based on the deck having a total high-card point strength value of 40 where:

  • Ace = 4
  • King = 3
  • Queen = 2
  • King = 1

Distributional points go something like:

  • Void = 3
  • Singleton = 2
  • Doubleton = 1

  • 6-card trump suit = 1

Other guidelines are:

  • open the bidding with 13 or more points;
  • overcall (make a competitive bid) with 10 or more points;
  • respond to your partners opening bid with 6 or more points;
  • in competition, make a free bid (the opponent to your right has bid) with 10 or more points;
  • make pre-emptive bids with weak hands and 7-card suits.
  • to make game, the partnership should have:
    • 26 points for 3NT, 4S or 4H;
    • 28 points for 5D or 5C.
